a quien comienzo a conocer entonces.
Profundidad frente a retórica, aunque ésta

Implications
“A journey and its graphic representation” might well have been the
title of this foreword, obviously adapted to the particular circumstances, yet
this is not a project to be perfunctorily dispatched with a purely protocolary
introduction. The emotional investment of all those involved—and indeed of mine
with them—was intense. This is because the project came about from a common
impetus, a shared intuition and an agreement between fellow travellers. One
cannot overlook the experiences and personal implications which have turned an
unexpected episode, suddenly suggested during another journey, into a reality:
when two artists met each other at a moment when past habits and new behaviours
converged as a result of the circumstances of life. Feeling that you are part
of this creative journey, at once witness and patron, forces you to reject
outright the option of outlining a historical overview of the evolution of
periegetic literature, the grand tour
or the scientific expedition, or of examining how painting was gradually
replaced by photography in its mission of providing the image that would record
impressions or illustrate stories of journeys. On the other hand, this is a
subject close to my heart, and one I regularly address as a lecturer in
Cultural Heritage for the Tourism degree course at Universidad Carlos III in
Madrid.
However, the circumstances that have led us here are convoluted. In
fact, it is a coming together of disparate incidences: a trip to the ARCOmadrid
art fair in 2008; meeting with Luis Pérez-Mínguez, who was introduced to me by
Manuel Pérez Milián; and an invitation from Luz Caballero to exhibit “No me
olvides” [Don’t Forget about Me] at Gran Canaria Espacio Digital. Excited by
the idea of returning to the sea, this show was the photographer’s first trip
after a long period of self-absorption, inner voyage and an escape from
darkness. Luis came to Gran Canaria with Antoni Socías, his former travelling
companion from other creative journeys, who I really began to know better at
that moment. Antoni is both an assistant and a witness of Luis’ progressive
recovery for new journeys, from the analogue to the digital, through Internet,
a new laboratory of shared production of the images contained in this book.
The
first visit to Gran Canaria motivated new projects: the idea for other journeys
which, like Resnou, led to a travel book focused on his personal
experiences in the Canary Islands, on the experience and development of the
corresponding creative projects, whether individual or joint, tied together by
a solid friendship. A retroactive effect soon emerged among all those who share
in a project which, from the very beginning, was a process of discovery: an
initiation into the world of digital photography for Luis, whilst in the case
of Antoni it was a chance to discover new spots
for his ten latest deaths. For Manuel Pérez Milián, this is an opportunity to
introduce the creative journey into the field of cultural management. A few
months later this journey through the islands is repeated. And we all discover
the affection of the others and a sort of brotherhood that freed us from
artistic conventions; a common gaze shared by such different fellow travellers.
Together with Luz Caballero I viewed a part of the material from the first
journey which had already been produced.
The
work by Antoni Socías and Luis Pérez-Mínguez undoubtedly addresses issues of
Representation: an inclusive, autobiographical representation which produces a
self-referential work in which the photographer is part of the scene. The
contemporary re-use of the typical recourse to “landscape with figures” is
superb; now understood as an indifference to clichés of representation and from
an inclusive behaviour of the artist within the work itself, both from the point
of view of physical and conceptual media. It does not matter who is taking the
photograph, one or the other, or even a third party. Photography is a
combination of space with its inhabiting figures; a communication and discovery
of textures, nuances, lights and shadows, contrasts, characters, gestures,
dialogue..., a story unfettered by conventions. Photography and a way of
approaching life turned into elements breaking free from the classic and
neoclassic constraints set in place over the last century. Antoni Socías and
Luis Pérez-Mínguez have nothing to do with photography’s function as a register
because representing a journey is much more than documentary evidence, though
photography obviously does produce a register where the agents are both subjects
and active players within the documents they generate; documents replete with
images and experiences and of the process of work itself. There was never any
intention to address the project from a conventional documentary optic, nor
focus it as a typological or genre scene. On the contrary, nadaNUEVO2
could be extrapolated to any place in the world... because it is a clear and
categorical abstraction of forms and concepts. Obviously, if the desert dunes
in the south of Gran Canaria are depicted, this means they are these particular
dunes and no others, and this will partly make them attractive to the
inhabitants of Gran Canaria and also to those who have seen them or wished to
visit them. The whole work revolves around the essential idea of the artist(s)—and
their process—as real character(s) of the work created in a space which could
be labelled as a virtual space.
A
fresh perspective has been brought to real situations built on the foundations
of the virtual world we are constructing. And in these coordinates of
unprecedented cartography, the vision of two aliens emerges in a new and at
once conventional world, plagued with contradictory elements and means of
coupling and adjusting derived from relentless influences such as
globalization, tourism, the modern ease of movement, the ubiquity of
photographs and distributing images, etc... Calling attention to the risk of
losing the capacity for diversity or picturesqueness, though we are sure that
the essential drive activating desire, the need to travel, has to be different;
it cannot be found in the destination, but in the escape from the point of
departure, in the need to be in a faraway place to face the image reflected in
another mirror, from the certainty of being superfluous in a different
landscape, with other figures. Otherwise, what’s the point of such a radical
statement by Fernando Pessoa when referring to the journey?: “wherever you go,
you will always find yourself”, a specially perceptive comment considering that
Pessoa himself never moved from Rua das Artes Gráficas in Lisbon, though he
mentally and literary travelled to the most beautiful spots of the world, a few
generations after the travelling craze of those British “impertinent onlookers”
who, carrying their sitting-room on their backs, aroused a picturesque feeling
among those who saw them as an eccentric part of their everyday landscape.
There
is an ongoing photographic dialogue between the two creators, and at the same
time with the place where the images were taken and which is now used to
showcase them in a whole process of re-writing the journey. Images, like
writing, are re-elaborated: two computers, one in Palma de Mallorca, the other
in Madrid; image and word, a dialogue in the making of the work. Also Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Gran Canaria. We also attended the preliminary reception of the results, shared texts,
the beginning of post-production, the preparation for printing..., we stretched
the space-time continuum and shared a conviction, a common image, we explored
the same photograph.
We
feel naked before the gaze of two photographers who understand art as depiction
and depict art as a centrepiece of a journey grounded in an impassive ethical
behaviour in the face of the random, uncertain path being taken by the current
art system. Profundity versus rhetoric, though the former can pervade
everything; respect for the free creative work from the museum as institution,
when the administrative regime seemed to have taken over the system and the
whole stratum seemed to have strangled the idea of free thinking and creation.
Thus, opposed to the huge amount of unnecessary works, this journey opens a
possibility of finding alternatives to the misguided way of communicating the
values of art. In short, a path to leave confusion behind from the authenticity
and commitment of (with) creators.
